Conserving Number 2
Number 2 Andrew Street was one of a number of Georgian properties in the area owned by Dublin City Council. In 1997, under the Historic Heart of Dublin project run by Dublin Civic Trust, the building was completely refurbished as a flagship conservation project, with a conservation architect appointed to oversee the works
The condition of the building at that time was fair, having been in office use, but needed sensitive upgrading and conservation works. Substantial work was undertaken in the basement to consolidate the foundations and resolve damp. The roof was fully restored and the exterior walls were structurally secured where necessary. Considerable efforts were made to preserve original internal joinery and decorative plasterwork. On completion the building was rented to a solicitor’s firm and subsequently sold.
The area has since seen a remarkable revival as one of the most fashionable districts of the city. The refurbishment of Number 2 demonstrates how the historic buildings of surrounding streets can be put to viable economic use as attractive working and living environments.
